Eyes have it... Have I Got News to return

- By Nicola Methven

HAVE I Got News For You team captains Ian Hislop and Paul Merton have picked the recent Dominic Cummings episode as one of the highlights of the show’s first 30 years.

The BBC One topical comedy show is returning on October 2 for its 60th series and will be back in the studio after use of living rooms during lockdown.

Hislop said: “We were all locked down obeying the Government rules – but Dominic Cummings was not.” Merton agreed: “I really enjoyed the last episode of last series, which was the week Dominic Cummings gave himself an eye test.”

Other highlights for Hislop, 60, include the “morning after the election” show when the floor manager kept on popping up to inform them which party leaders had quit during the recording.

Merton, 63, said one of his favourite shows was when Sir Bruce Forsyth was host in 2003, bringing many games from his TV shows including Play Your Cards Right and The Generation Game.

He said: “He brought so much fun to the set and made it so unlike any other episode.”

The new run will have a reduced, socially distanced studio audience with a second audience watching a live screening.

Hislop, the only person to have been in every episode, added: “I never expected the show to survive this long. When we made the pilot 30 years ago my late mother came to see it and I asked her what she thought of it.

“Her verdict was, ‘ Never mind dear’.”
