THE POSITIVE PROFESSOR

- PROFESSOR KAROL SIKORA CMO of Rutherford Cancer Centres and Former Director of WHO Cancer Programme

SOCIAL media’s voice of calm Karol Sikora has been signed up by the Daily Express. Readers can now enjoy his soothing advice in these troubled times that have won him hundreds of thousands of followers on Twitter. If you need reassuring everything’s going to be all right read Professor Positivity.

I HAVE tried to be as broadly supportive of the Government as I can during this crisis, whilst offering constructive criticism where I thought they were going wrong.

Let me be clear – I am vehemently opposed to a second lockdown.

I think it would be a total disaster. We simply cannot continue to be stuck in this cycle of waiting for a vaccine that may never come.

As always, it’s too easy to criticise, so a group of us have come together to try to offer solutions.

Professors Carl Heneghan, Sunetra Gupta, Francois Balloux, Robert Dingwall, myself and many others are some of the best in their field – epidemiologists, economists, oncologists, cardiologists, the list goes on. We tried to bring in as many people from various sectors to make it as comprehensive as possible because this virus affects everyone and everything.

Solely listening to epidemiologists has not been a successful strategy for this Government so far.

The strategy at the moment is a mess. We need to learn to live with this virus and focus Government efforts on protecting those at risk.

I’m in a high- risk group and I understand that it is my responsibility to take extra care of myself. I think millions of others have the same approach.

We believe that there needs to be a fundamental rethink in how we approach this virus.

At the moment it seems to be polarised between people who think millions could die and those who believe it is a hoax.

There has to be a way to find a balance and we’re hoping that we can push the Government into at least seriously thinking about it.
