SADLY these new limits also raise the spectre of loneliness. One of the greatest cruelties of the cursed Covid- 19 must be that it has severed bonds with isolated people – particularly the elderly.
Bravo, then, to Dame Esther Rantzen, who has urged people across the country to remember the lonely, elderly and vulnerable. Dame Esther, who founded loneliness helpline The Silver Line, has observed that as well as often being far from old friends and families, many older folk don’t like using digital communication such as social media, smartphones and Zoom, and expect the more personal approach of an earlier generation.
Already feeling forgotten, they then retreat further into isolation. As Dame Esther says, there’s a very simple first step – pick up the phone and talk.
