Squish and chips could save seas
WE could soon be eating jellyfish and chips to save threatened species.
Conservationists say 92 endangered and 11 critically endangered sea creatures end up on our plate as seafood.
And 13 of these are consumed in Europe, with the UK, Germany, and Spain the top importers by volume and value alongside the US.
Britain requires only fresh, chilled and live fish to be labelled, while cooked fish such as a battered fillet can slip through the net.
The researchers said: “Jellyfish could replace fish and chips on a new sustainable takeaway menu to help keep threatened species off the plate.”
Doctoral student Leslie Roberson, from the University of Queensland, said: “It’s really hard to trace seafood back to its origin and species because the industry is such a mess.”
Her colleague Dr Carissa Klein added: “We’d never consider eating mountain gorillas or elephants, both of which are endangered.”
