HARRY & MEGHAN

VIDEO STIRS UP POLITICAL STORM IN U. S.

- By Christopher Bucktin US Editor

BUCKINGHAM Palace last night distanced itself from comments made by Prince Harry urging Americans to “reject hate speech” and vote in the presidential election.

Harry and his wife Meghan has faced a backlash amid claims of political interference and suggestions he is telling people to vote against President Donald Trump.

A Palace spokesman said: “The Duke is not a working member of the Royal Family and any comments he makes are made in a personal capacity.”

Speaking from their home in California in a Time 100 video, Harry, 36, said: “As we approach this November, it’s vital that we reject hate speech, misinformation and online negativity.”

He added: “When the bad outweighs the good, for many, whether we realise it or not, it erodes our ability to have compassion and our ability to put ourself in someone else’s shoes. Because when one person buys into negativity online, the effects are felt exponentially. It’s time to not only reflect but act.”

Meghan, 39, called the presidential race the “most important election of our lifetime” as the couple urged Americans to vote.

She said: “Every four years we are told the same thing, that this is the most important election of our lifetime. But this one is.

“When we vote, our values are put into action, and our voices are heard. Your voice is a reminder that you matter because you do, and you deserve to be heard.”

Although the couple did not express support for either candidate, many took the video to be anti- Trump.

Piers Morgan tweeted: “Prince Harry poking his

‘ woke’ nose into the US election and effectively telling Americans to vote against President Trump is completely unacceptable behaviour for a member of the Royal Family.”

A source close to Harry said: “The Duke was talking about the tone of debate in the run- up to an election which is already quite febrile. He is not talking about any candidate.” Yesterday a senior adviser for Mr Trump’s election campaign manager attacked the couple. Corey Lewandowski said: “They made Britain great again by leaving, I hope they do the same for us.”
