Starmer won’t rule out deal with SNP
LABOUR has refused to rule out backing a second referendum on Scottish independence.
Sir Keir Starmer said the party would fight Scottish elections next May opposing independence, but said he did not know what its position would be after that.
Michael Gove accused the opposition leader of being ready to work with the Scottish National Party to renege on the 2014 referendum on independence.
The Cabinet minister said: “Sir Keir Starmer has a problem accepting referendum results. He tried to block Brexit, and now he wants to work with Nicola Sturgeon to renege on the Scottish referendum result and break up the UK.”
Failure
Sir Keir told the BBC: “I am setting out the position we will be taking going into the May election. We don’t know what will happen after that.”
Sir Keir demanded a prime time TV slot 24 hours after Boris Johnson gave an address to the nation on the latest changes to coronavirus rules. He urged the public to abide by the new restrictions but said: “The return of this virus, and the return of restrictions, are not an act of God.
“They’re a failure of government. The British people have done everything asked of them.
“But I’m afraid the Government has not.”
He added: “It’s a national scandal that we still don’t have a testing system that works.”
Labour suffered its worst electoral defeat in 80 years last December and Sir Keir admitted he has a mountain to climb to win back the party’s traditional working class supporters.
