Schoolboy saves sister from choking on Lego

-

A BOY of 10 has been hailed a hero after using the Heimlich manoeuvre to save his little sister after she choked on a piece Lego.

Quick- thinking Harrison Walmsley did not hesitate to perform the life- saving technique when six- year- old Eva barged into his room crying and struggling to breathe.

He had learned first aid at school in March but said he knew what he needed to do to “make sure she was safe”. Harrison dislodged the Lego by hitting Eva’s back multiple times before doing the Heimlich manoeuvre – abdominal thrusts that will expel air and any objects from the lungs.

The schoolboy, from Blackburn, Lancs, said: “It was terrifying when I had to put the knowledge I’d learned into action but I’m happy I was able to do it all right.

“I just wanted Eva to be safe. I knew what I needed to do. She was choking and I had to act.” Harrison’s parents have spoken of their pride after they realised what he had done.

Dad Brian, 37, said: “It was a split- second decision that saved her life – I’m bursting with pride with how Harrison acted. He’s amazingly calm.”
