Q

I’m a woman in my 50s and have noticed an increase in facial hair. Is this common and is there a natural solution?

A

Facial hair is common and very normal. Certain medications or hormones, especially around the menopause, can sometimes trigger hairs to sprout from the chin, upper lip and cheeks. Threading is one of the easiest ways to deal with facial hair. The hairs are twisted between two pieces of thread and then pulled out. Expect to pay around £ 10- £ 20 for an area of your face. For an at- home solution, try depilatory creams but look for a sensitive skin formula and always test before using it on your face. Alternatively, try Veet Easygrip Face Wax Strips for Sensitive Skin, £ 7 ( boots. com). Waxing means the hair is removed from the root, so you’ll have smooth skin for up to four weeks. There are also some good handheld DIY hair- removal gadgets that use light- based technology similar to IPL to permanently get rid of facial hair. It will take a few sessions before you start seeing results, but because it’s a home treatment you can do it at your leisure. Try Philips Lumea Prestige IPL Hair Removal device, £ 325 ( johnlewis. com).
