Cenotaph service scaled back

-

A SMALL group of fewer than 100 veterans will be invited to march past the Cenotaph in a scaled back Remembrance Sunday service this year.

The ceremony is normally attended by 10,000 heroes but even a reduced parade for 2,000 has been scrapped because of coronavirus.

The Queen and other senior members of the Royal Family will join politicians and “a few more than a handful” of veterans to lay wreaths at the monument, marking 100 years since it was erected.

Culture Secretary Oliver Dowden said: “It is with a heavy heart that I must ask people not to attend the ceremony at the Cenotaph this year in order to keep veterans and the public safe.”

Some events are due to take place around the country but many have already been cancelled. They must comply with social distancing rules and number restrictions.
