Wales ‘ to scan car plates’

- By Michael Knowles

WELSH police could scan vehicle number plates to stop visitors.

First Minister Mark Drakeford said he was planning how to allow police to turn people back unless they had a valid reason to visit.

The move would be the first ever ban on visitors from the rest of the UK.

Mr Drakeford suggested it would apply to anyone from lockdown Tier 2 or 3.

He said: “I believe the police will have a range of techniques.

“Number plates are one of the ways in which they are able to identify cars that are travelling long distances but that won’t be the only way.”

The new rules were set to come into force tonight.

Commons Leader Jacob Rees- Mogg branded any move “unconstitutional”.
