Marston’s to shed 2,000 pub jobs
PUB chain Marston’s is to axe more than 2,000 jobs over the effect of Covid curfews and restrictions on business.
Bosses said around 2,150 workers currently on furlough support would be affected and further cost- cutting plans will be launched at the end of the year.
The Wolverhampton- based group which owns 1,400 UK pubs, including the Pitcher & Piano bar chain and employs around 14,000, claimed the new rules “undermine consumer confidence and create uncertainty”.
Chief executive Ralph Findlay said yesterday the job losses were “an inevitable consequence of the limitations placed upon our business”.
The measures to tackle the surge in coronavirus cases have seen curfews on hospitality venues in highrisk areas and the closures of sites not serving food.
Shadow business minister Lucy Powell said of Marston’s announcement: “I fear this will just be the tip of the iceberg for hospitality businesses as new restrictions begin to bite.”
Earlier this month Greene King announced plans to shed 800 pub jobs.
