True hero, 100 times over

- By Liz Perkins

A HERO Afghanistan veteran who twice cheated death in action will today complete running 100 half marathons in 100 days. Carl Shadrake, 36, has his sights set on finishing at the top of Snowdon.

In 2007, he suffered a brain injury after a suicide bomber detonated a device. Five years later he was left with shrapnel embedded across his body when a colleague g stood on an improvised explosive device. And while recovering, the dad of two found out that his brother Jamie, 20, was killed serving as a guardsman also in the Helmand Province. As he battled with his struggles, which led to him to become unfit and overweight, he turned to Help For Heroes and SSAFA for support.

The former sergeant from Fleet, Hants – who has raised almost £ 10,000 – said: “I wanted to finish with something big.

“My legs are holding up really well, it’s about getting my head in the right frame of mind.

“It took quite a few years to get where I am now.”
