When life gives you lemons...

£ 250k lotto win on trip to buy fruit

- By Chris Riches

A BARMAN who popped out for lemons to serve with his gin got just the tonic – a £ 250,000 lottery scratchcard win.

John Reid bought a £ 5 National Lottery Triple Jackpot scratchcard from Asda on a whim when he went to buy the citrus fruit.

Back at the Railway Tavern in Bexley, south- east London, a delighted John thought he had scooped £ 250 – then put his glasses on and screamed as he saw “K” after the amount.

John, 61, from Southall, west London, says the cash will be especially handy as the capital’s pubs face a possible Tier 3 Covid lockdown.

He said: “It’s a tricky time to be running pubs but I’ve been here for the good times and I’m going to carry on in the trickier times too. Besides, I’d be bored without the banter!

“I’m sure the regulars will all have plenty of advice about what I should do with the money. I may buy myself a Jeep 4x4 and a property.”

John added: “I’ve been in the pub game for more than 20 years so I’ve heard many tales about people who had won a few quid on the lottery. “Maybe it was those stories but I always believed I was going to have a good win. Looks like I was right and now I’ll be the talk of the pub for a bit.”
