Lester on an £ 80,000 winner as he sells off his treasures
HORSE racing legend Lester Piggott is selling trophies and other prized mementos from his illustrious career.
The 84- year- old, regarded as one of the greatest ever flat racing jockeys, is having a clearout at his home in Newmarket, Suffolk.
He is expected to earn £ 80,000 from next month’s sale, consisting of nearly 70 lots, at Graham Budd Auctions in London.
Highlights include his 1957 and 1960 Epsom Derby winner’s trophies – both valued at £ 7,000. His 2,000 Guineas prize from 1985 is set to sell for £ 2,500.
Also in the sale are Piggott’s 1957 and 1963 Ascot Gold Cups as well as other awards to acknowledge his 4,493 career wins.
His BBC TV Lifetime Achievement award is valued at £ 1,500, while six signed cigar boxes could make £ 300.
His racing goggles carry an estimate of £ 150, as does his UK Team jockey cap silk for the 1982 Sandown
Salver jockey’s competition. Coming from a horce racing family, the auction also features trophies won by his father Keith and grandfather Ernie during their own distinguished careers.
The 1963 Grand National trophy awarded to Keith Piggott, who trained Ayala, is expected to fetch £ 10,000.
A jockey’s trophy for the 1919 Grand National won by Ernie Piggott on Poethlyn is set to make £ 10,000.
Auctioneer Graham Budd said: “Lester is now in his 80s and is at that stage in his life where he has accumulated a wealth of stuff and is sorting out what to keep and what to let go.”
