Widow, 92, left bloodied as home raid thugs try to snatch wedding ring

- By Jack Evans

POLICE are hunting for shameless thugs who left a 92- year- old widow in agony after they tried to rip her engagement ring off her finger during a terrifying burglary.

Shocking photos show the bruised and bloodied hand of the frail pensioner after the three yobs struck.

They crowbarred the victim’s front door open before storming into her Coventry home at around 2.45pm on Wednesday.

They assaulted her and tried to snatch the diamond ring – given by her late husband – before fleeing with more than £ 1,000 in cash.

West Midlands Police said the victim had been saving the money to buy a three- piece suite as they launched an appeal to track down the callous crooks.

Detectives are trawling CCTV and conducting local inquiries as part of their search for the men, who are described as being white, in their 30s and around 5ft 10in tall.

Detective Constable Surinder Dadry, from CID, said: “It’s hard to imagine how anyone could sink so low as to assault an elderly woman and try to rip a piece of sentimental jewellery from their finger.

“The victim’s daughter left the house just minutes before so we’re looking into whether the offenders had been watching the address.

“It was a brazen offence, the men having prised open the front door in the middle of the afternoon.

“If anyone saw three men in the area acting suspiciously I’d urge them to get in touch. Please check CCTV to see if the offenders are on camera.

“There will be people in the community who suspect who was involved. Has someone you know been boasting about coming into some money or flashing cash around?

“I’d ask those people to look into their consciences and do the right thing and contact us. This victim could have been your elderly mother or grandmother.”
