SIX BELTING GERMAN BEERS
1 Krombacher Pils 660ml ( From £ 2, 4.8%)
Krombacher beers have been produced exclusively in the small town of Krombach, nestling in the Siegerland Hills of Westphalia in north- western Germany since 1803 and combining traditional methods and modern tech. A premium lager brewed with local mineral spring water. Available from Morrisons and Tesco.
2 Bitburger Premium Pils 500ml (£ 2.32, 4.8%)
Germany’s most popular domestic brand, Bitburger is another highly traditional lager, brewed continuously for more than two centuries. High carbonation creates a lively head, with a hoppy and a honeyed aftertaste. Available from Beers of Europe.
3 Erdinger Weißbier 500ml (£ 1.85, 5.3%)
Specialists in wheat beers for 130 years, the Erdinger brewery in the Bavarian town of Erding makes the world’s most popular wheat beer. Spicy wheat aromas combine with bitter hops. Available from Sainsbury’s.
4 Rothaus Tannenzäpfle 330ml (£ 1.83, 5.1%)
The state- owned Rothaus in German’s southern Black Forest’s signature lager translates as “pinecone” – named after the bottle shape. But there’s also something deliciously sprucey about it. Light in colour and clean and crisp in taste. Available from Beers of Europe.
5 Warsteiner 660ml (£ 1.90, 4.8%)
Another hoppy golden pilsner with a smooth, crisp and refreshing finish, Warsteiner has been brewed in Warstein since the mid- 18th century. Another highly- carbonated lager with a refreshing finish. Available from Sainsbury’s.
6Becks 275ml (£ 4.50 x 6, 4.8%)
Britain’s most popular German beer, brewed in Bremen in the north of the country for 140 years and utterly distinctive. The classic green bottle hides a beautifully golden- hued beer with a full- bodied taste and hoppy bouquet. Alcohol- free Becks Blue is great too. Available from Sainsbury’s.
