Officer’s alleged killer ‘ too ill’ for a trial
THE suspected killer of police sergeant Matt Ratana is so ill he may never face a trial.
Louis De Zoysa, 23, blasted himself in the neck after allegedly shooting the officer in the chest while handcuffed.
He suffered brain damage and is paralysed, say sources.
De Zoysa’s condition is no longer life- threatening. But he is so seriously ill, the chances of him being prosecuted for murder or manslaughter are said to be remote.
Scotland Yard revealed he is “unfit to be interviewed”.
New Zealand- born Sgt
Ratana, 54, died after he was shot in the chest in the custody centre at Croydon police station, south London, in the early hours of September 25.
Shortly before, De Zoysa had been arrested on suspicion of possessing ammunition and a class B drug.
While his hands were cuffed behind his back, the young man is said to have pulled a revolver from his underpants and killed Sgt Ratana.
The officer’s girlfriend of five years Su Bushby called him her “gentle giant” and “soul mate”.
An inquiry is to focus on how De Zoysa allegedly managed to smuggle a gun into the station.
