Cod War veteran warns of EU threat to our vessels

AS someone who took part in the second “Cod War” in 1973 on board HMS Arethusa, I remember it well (“Boris plans to quit Brexit talks as they stall on fish quotas”, October 15). As well as protecting our trawlers from Icelandic vessels we had to protect ourselves.

We were hit by the gunboat Odin but she had to limp off to safety while we carried on with our duties.

I would have thought, with that experience, the French would not be a problem. Our fleet will need protection, especially as the EU will not obey the rules of the sea. Hamish Smillie, Whitstable, Kent
