Wasteful Mitrovic in the doghouse

MITROVIC MISSES PENALTY THEN CONCEDES ONE:

- DAVID ANDERSON

ALEKSANDAR Mitrovic probably tried to kick the cat last night – and most likely missed.

The Fulham striker, below, wasted a penalty then conceded one for Sheffield United’s late equaliser before fluffing a great chance at the death.

It cost Fulham a first win of the season.

Fulham manager Scott Parker said: “Aleks had a tough day, but this is a player who has scored a lot of penalties. Sometimes you have bad days when it goes like that.

“What will be telling will be how he reacts. I have no doubt it will be in a positive way.”

Blades boss Chris Wilder has been a big critic of VAR but he had it to thank for United’s first point of the season, having given them their penalty for Mitrovic’s high kick on Jack Robinson. Billy Sharp, who had been on the pitch for four minutes, scored to cancel out Ademola Lookman’s opener.

United created enough chances to win the game in the first 45 minutes, when Oli McBurnie could have had a hat- trick, but Fulham were the better side in the second half.

Fulham should have gone ahead when Robinson inexplicably stuck up his arm and handled a corner, only for Mitrovic to graze the bar from the spot.

Fulham did score when Lookman beat two men before smashing home a brilliant effort. But the Blades equalised from the spot.
