Our front page showed John F Kennedy Jr on his third birthday saluting as his father’s coffin was taken from St Matthew’s Cathedral, Washington DC, to be buried at Arlington National Cemetery, Virginia.

More than one million mourners lined the route of JFK’s funeral procession in the US capital, while tens of millions more around the world watched on television.

52 years ago ( 1968)

The Race Relations Act made it unlawful to refuse housing, jobs or public services to people on the grounds of colour or religion.

The Act also widened the scope of the Race Relations Board to deal with complaints of discrimina­tion and set up a new body, the Community Relations Commission.

37 years ago ( 1983)

An armed gang carried out Britain’s largest ever gold heist at Heathrow Airport.

More than £ 25million worth of gold bullion bound for the Far East was stolen from the Brink’s- Mat warehouse near the airport.

Police estimated at least 15 were involved in the planning of the robbery but only three were ever convicted.
