‘ CONCUSSION RULE DANGEROUS’ WARNS STAR WHO NEVER CAME BACK FROM BAD HEAD INJURY Former England player Ryan Mason never blamed Gary Cahill for his injury in 2017 that required life- saving surgery, ended his career and left a legacy of pain. But he’s angr

RYAN MASON has admitted his “shock” that David Luiz was not taken off at the Emirates on Sunday.

Second Impact Syndrome – being hit again before the brain has healed from initial concussion – can lead to collapse and brain damage.

“I was upset to see something hing like that happen on a football all pitch again, it’s very y concerning,” said Mason.

“It’s a real shame my y incident didn’t change the e perception. What is it really y going to take for people to start realising this is something ething really, really serious?

“I’ll be honest, I was shocked David Luiz was allowed to play on.

“The noise, the impact, the speed of the challenge as well – it was a bad one. It didn’t help that there were no fans and you could actually hear the point of contact.” Wolves striker Raul Jimenez was said to be “comfortable” and “resting” g and was able to see his partn partner Daniela Basso yes yesterday morning, after ha having surgery in a London h hospital in the hours fo following the game. Mason, left, wishes him a fu full and speedy recovery. His own injury, sustained in a clash of heads with Chelsea’s Gary Cahill while playing for Hull in January 2017, needed surgery too – and finished his career.

But his thoughts are also with Luiz, who was finally sent home at half- time after playing for 40 minutes with heavy bandaging across a three- inch head gash.

“I’m not criticising the Arsenal doctor because there’s a protocol in place and I’m sure he’s followed that,” said Mason, speaking on TalkSPORT.

“But that protocol that is currently in place is not enough – it’s not enough just to have two or three minutes.

“The game needs change this rule.

“It’s pretty clear that five minutes on the side of the pitch – while there is pressure to get the game restarted – is not enough to see if someone is concussed or not. This protocol we to have in place dangerous.”

Even the name of the existing protocol in the Premier League handbook sounds inadequate – it’s called the Pocket Concussion Recognition Tool.

The more comprehensive SCAT5 protocol, also endorsed by FIFA, says in its first paragraph that it “cannot be performed correctly in less than 10 minutes”.

It is why medical professionals are leading the calls for temporary substitutes – to give them time to do the job right.

Arsenal’s doctor visited Luiz at home yesterday. It could be another 24 hours before it is known for certain if a concussion has not occurred. Mikel Arteta took off Sokratis with suspected concussion in his first game in charge. The question is when will football’s laws take player welfare as seriously? isn’t OK and it’s

Five minutes is not long enough to do job right
