EasyJet charges for hand luggage

- By Steph Spyro

EASYJET has angered passengers by unveiling plans to charge them for storing luggage in overhead lockers.

The budget airline said customers could still carry a bag for free, only if it fits under the seat.

But flyers will have to pay an extra £ 24 to the fare if they want to take anything larger from February 10 next year.

Passengers say the airline is just following rivals with the charges.

EasyJet insists that the new rules will improve flight boarding and punctuality.

The customers paying more will be entitled to select a seat either at the front of the plane or with extra legroom.

Rob Burgess, editor of frequent flyer website, Head for Points, said: “It is disappointing to see easyJet following Ryanair and Wizz Air with charges for using the overhead bins.

“With passenger demand not predicted to return to 2019 levels until at least 2023, it seems foolish to alienate customers in this way.”

Online user Celina Carney said: “Just another way to make money to stop people bringing on their small cabin size suitcases which now you won’t be able to do and will therefore have to pay for more checked luggage.”

Another added: “The one main selling point you had over your rivals was the generous hand luggage. Now just set your stall to the same standard as Ryanair and Wizz.

“May as well just book with them in future. Nonsensical decision.”

Robert Carey, of easyJet, said: “Our new policy will improve boarding and punctuality for everyone, as well as give our customers certainty of what they will have with them onboard.”
