CAPTURE BRITAIN 2020 IN ALL ITS BEAUTY AND POSITIVITY

-

THE DAILY EXPRESS, together with our parent company Reach’s local titles, is calling on readers to capture a worthy moment in time that represents a modern, diverse and inclusive Britain in 2020. The winning photograph will be displayed in London’s V& A museum – home to one of the world’s biggest and most significant collections comprising 800,000 images. It will also be printed in the Daily Express, as well as the Manchester Evening News, Liverpool Echo, and Birmingham Mail. Entries can be taken on anything from a basic camera phone to the latest Canon. What matters most is expressiveness of thought and positivity. Competition judge and Coronation Street actor Shobna Gulati, a keen photography fan, shares her thoughts. “Art makes it possible to reflect upon and escape the sometimes harsh realities of life,” she says. “It can create an opportunity to find beauty and solace. I will be looking for an image that represents this and our brilliant diverse nation. After a year like 2020, I think we all need to escape, even momentarily.” Her thoughts are shared by Kwame KweiArmah, artistic director of the Young Vic. Although 2020 will be remembered as a difficult year, he says, there have been silver linings. “What it did show is that diverse Britain stood up and stood together,” he says. “We united in a powerful way. This was particularly evident during the summer of social injustice, when people came together to say things must change. That was the highlight of 2020. I hope the photographs submitted will capture this sense of togetherness and unity. I look forward to helping find that positivity through the lens of a brilliant photographic artist.” Shobna and Kwame are joined on the judging panel by Twiggy, award- wining photographer Mike Moore and V& A Director Tristram Hunt.
