State of the art... Queen’s paintings on show
SOME of the Queen’s finest paintings – which usually hang in one room at Buckingham Palace – will go on public display today.
The 65 masterpieces by the likes of Rembrandt, Rubens and Canaletto, above, are normally only seen by the Royal Family and VIP guests entertained in the State Rooms. But they have been taken down from the 317- year- old walls while a £ 369million refurbishment takes place – and are now on show at The Queen’s Gallery next door.
Museum director Tim Knox said: “We’re extremely privileged to care for a truly extraordinary collection of Dutch, Flemish and Italian Old Master paintings on behalf of Her Majesty the Queen.
“This exhibition brings together some of the most celebrated works.”
Among the highlights are Johannes Vermeer’s The Music Lesson, painted in the early 1660s, and Guido Cagnacci’s
Jacob Peeling The Rods, which was painted around 1650 .
There is also a whole wall dedicated to works by Rembrandt, including The Shipbuilder And His Wife, which he painted in 1633.
The Masterpieces From Buckingham Palace exhibition takes place at The Queen’s Gallery until February 2022.
