400 feared hurt by rogue NHS gynaecologist

- By Josh Payne

NEARLY 400 patients of a hospital gynaecologist may have suffered “unnecessary harm” at his hands, NHS bosses have revealed.

University Hospitals of Derby and Burton Foundation Trust ( UHDB) has written to 372 women following a review of ex- consultant Daniel Hay after colleagues raised the alarm.

He is being investigated and eight patients found to have been “unnecessarily harmed”. Mr Hay, who worked at Royal Derby and Ripley Hospitals, has not operated since 2018 and has already left the trust.

The review was launched in 2018 and initially looked at the treatment of 193 patients. A further 79 were added by April this year and another 110 were sent letters yesterday.

UHDB said the latest women added to the review had an outpatient appointment but no surgery between April 2017 and July 2018 at

Ripley Hospital in Derbyshire. Dr Magnus Harrison, the trust’s executive medical director, apologised in April to “any patients who may have received a standard of care that is below that expected”.

Yesterday he added: “We have widened the review to a specific outpatient clinic that took place at Ripley Hospital to understand the care being provided there.

“We are doing this proactively, rather than in response to any specific concerns.

“Each of the women has been informed that there are no concerns regarding her current health.”

Irwin Mitchell lawyer Tim Annett said: “There was already a great deal of concern among women, so today’s development is likely to add to that. We welcome the trust’s pledge to undertake the most thorough review.”
