FEW individuals summed up the British spirit better than the late Dame Barbara Windsor whose death at 83 was sadly confirmed in the early hours of Friday.

As a Carry On actress she embodied an innocent British sauciness and cheekiness in times when the politically correct misery guts of this day and age are trying to ban it from our culture.

As Peggy Mitchell in EastEnders she portrayed the tough working class matriarch which underlined what a great actress she was. But she also had a big heart and campaigned for many charities including for a cure for Alzheimer’s which sadly took her life this week.
