- By Chris Riches

FORMULA 1 star Lewis Hamilton scooped his second BBC Sports Personality of the Year award – with Marcus Rashford also lauded.

Mercedes driver Hamilton, 35, won his first SPOTY gong in 2014 and has come runner up four times, in 2007, 2008, 2018 and 2019.

Hamilton has won a joint- record seven World Drivers’ Championship titles and boasts the sport’s most wins ( 95), pole positions ( 98) and podium finishes ( 165).

The F1 star paid tribute to frontline workers and encouraged people to be positive. He said: “Never give up on yourself.”

Liverpool star Jordan Henderson came second and female jockey Hollie Doyle was third. Liverpool won team of the year after clinching their first league title since 1990.

The socially- distanced event took place with no studio audience at the BBC’s complex in Salford, Greater Manchester.

The organisers introduced new categories to take account of this difficult year.

England striker Marcus Rashford, 23, was presented with a special award for his work off the field. The Manchester United forward was given an MBE in the summer for his work during lockdown tackling child food poverty.

He twice convinced Prime Minster Boris Johnson to change government policy on free school meal vouchers in holidays.

Another hero of the pandemic 100 year- old Captain Tom Moore – who raised £ 33million for NHS charities – gave his name to a second new prize. ‘ The Captain Tom: Young Unsung Hero Award’ honours a younger person for their contribution to community sport.

The world sports star of the year is the Russian UFC lightweight champion, Khabib Nurmagomedov.
