collapse just before the break. Mourinho, below, said: “The player made a mistake but, before his mistake in minute 45 or 46, we had other players making mistakes in other areas of the pitch. I can’t blame a player for a mistake.”

Vardy certainly made no mistake and said it was no more than Leicester deserved for doing their homework.

“We came here with a game plan,” ” said the Foxes striker. “I think we’ve nailed what we wanted to do. That set us on the way to get the three points we deserved. We wanted to get about them, didn’t want to give too much time.

“We felt we could let them come up to the first thi third and then when they came to the halfway half line we could put the press on, find space and create chances.” Rodgers was delighted as Leicester got revenge for their 3- 0 defeat at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in July.

T The Foxes boss said: “I thought it was an outstanding team performance. We thoroughly deserved to win.

“We had a lot of really good performances but, in terms of strategy of the game, it was amazing. We’ve learned from six months ago here. We imposed ourselves on the game and managed their counter- attack.”

Rodgers was full of praise for Vardy. He said: “Jamie is one of the best strikers in the world. At what he does, there’s not too many better. His strength is on the last line.

“There’s no ego. He’s not frightened to do the dirty work. He runs, presses. Tactically, he’s very good and in a pressure moment, he puts the penalty away.

“Jamie must be horrible to play against. His movement is so clever. It’s why he hits this level. I can’t speak highly enough of him. He’s a great guy, a great professional.”
