AS far as pre- Christmas excitement goes, my enthusiasm has been dampened compared to past years but I refuse to allow our new Tier 4 status ruin our day. In the traditions of eastern Europe, Christmas begins with the first star on the evening of the 24th – tonight.

Clearly plans have had to change but we are determined to make the best of a bad situation. We have our young granddaughter living with us so that will certainly brighten the day up. When you get to my age Christmases aren’t as exciting as they used to be, but having some young energy in the house certainly goes a long way to remedying that.

We will have fun and play games, maybe a little too much wine followed by a nap on the sofa just like every other year.

We’re fortunate that we have so much to be grateful for. This time of year is fantastic for many, but for some it can be difficult even at the best of times. We are far from the best of times and too many will be spending the coming days alone.

For regular readers, I ask just one thing. If you know any elderly or lonely people spending Christmas by themselves, why not drop a note round asking if there is anything you can do? Perhaps pick up some late groceries or even just a cup of tea through the window tomorrow.

Many will be too proud to accept, but it may just bring a little smile knowing that someone made the effort.

For the next few days try to enjoy yourselves ( all within the rules!). We’ve had a tough year and we all deserve a little fun at Christmas.
