A SEX prowler accused of raping and murdering student Libby Squire insisted to police he wanted her found safe.

A seven-week search ended when the philosophy undergraduate’s body was pulled from the Humber estuary.

Pawel Relowicz was arrested after CCTV footage showed him driving Libby, 21, from a street corner where she had been lying in snow crying and screaming.

But after police recovered her body his DNA was found and the jury has been told he now claimed to have had “consensual sex” with Libby during a brief encounter.

Married father-of-two Relowicz told detectives he had nothing to do with her disappearance. He said: “I want her to be found. I’ve never been so honest in my life like I have been like this.”

Police told him that Libby’s mum and dad were “absolutely frantic with worry”. Officers added: “You are a parent yourself. They need to know some answers, please if you know anything, tell us.”

But Polish-born Relowicz, 26, handed detectives a statement which said: “I am not involved in the kidnap or disappearance of Liberty Squire. I have already given a detailed account to the police and I have nothing else to add at this stage.”

Accused...Pawel Relowicz, the alleged murder scene, and student Libby Squire, 21

The factory butcher admitted finding Libby, originally from High Wycombe, Bucks, crying and saying that she needed her mother.

The jury at Sheffield Crown Court heard he offered her a lift home in his Vauxhall Astra but he told her to get out because he thought she was going to be sick.

He told police he saw her walking along the pavement as he drove away and he did not see her again. Drunk Libby, who was at the University of Hull, had been refused entry to a club during a night out with

friends on January 31, 2019. They had put her in a taxi to return home.

But after being dropped at her front door she staggered around streets, rebuffing offers of help from good Samaritans.

Prosecutor Richard Wright, QC, previously said Relowicz, who has nine sexually motivated offence convictions, was “prowling the student area” looking for an opportunity to commit a sex offence.

It is alleged he raped and murdered her before dumping her “dead or dying” body in the River Hull. The trial continues.
