I was out of control, ‘pest’ tells Libby jury

- By Paul Jeeves

THE man accused of raping and murdering student Libby Squire yesterday admitted his sexual urges had been “out of control”.

Married father-of-two Pawel Relowicz says he had consensual sex after finding Libby “drunk and vulnerable” crying for her mum in the snow, a court heard.

Libby vanished after a night out with friends in Hull on January 31, 2019, and her body was recovered from the Humber estuary seven weeks later.

Relowicz, 26, told detectives he hadn’t seen Libby but changed his story after his DNA was found on her body.

The Polish-born meat factory butcher had “uncontrollable urges” and convictions for “sexually motivated” crimes in which he “prowled” around Hull’s student area, Sheffield Crown Court was told.

Relowicz denied that the rape and murder of Libby, 21, was the “next step up” when this was put to him by prosecutor Richard Wright, QC.

Under crossexamination, Relowicz admitted he went out looking for “easy sex”.

He told the jury Libby was in a “drunk and distressed” state when he found her at around midnight and appeared as though she had “taken something” or been “spiked”.

Relowicz said he offered to drive her home but that they ended up having sex by the road before he left to return home. It is alleged he drove Libby to a park, raping her then dumping her “dead or dying” into the River Hull.

Oliver Saxby, QC, defending, admitted his client was a “disgusting” sex pest but insisted he did not kill Libby. And that on the night of her disappearance she was “vulnerable to her own misadventure” and may have fallen into a river.

The trial continues.
