Contactless limit rise is on the cards
THE contactless card payment limit could soon be raised to £100.
The change is being considered by the Financial Conduct Authority which says there has been an increase in digital transactions since the last rise in April, from £30 to £45.
But the City regulator says it will first consult customers and retailers on the proposed move.
It said: “Recognising changing behaviour, we will be seeking views on amending our rules to allow for a possible increase to £100.”
Many retailers have preferred card payments during the pandemic and the rise in contactless threatens the use of cash.
But the Government says it will use the law to protect notes and coins.
Gareth Shaw of Which? said: “Raising the limit will be helpful for those who are comfortable managing their money digitally.
“However, millions still rely on cash.”
