Gone With The Wind signed by Gable and Leigh is up for sale

- By Mark Reynolds

A RARE copy of Gone With The Wind signed by the cast of the classic film is expected to make more than £7,000.

The novel was autographed by screen icons Clark Gable and Vivien Leigh as well as producer David Selznick.

British actress Olivia de Havilland, Leslie Howard and Thomas Mitchell also added their signatures.

It is believed the stars put pen to paper at the 1939 US premiere of the movie, which scooped eight Oscars, including best picture.

The film, adapted from Margaret Mitchell’s 1936 novel, tells the story of the romance between Scarlett O’Hara, the daughter of a southern plantation owner played by Leigh, and Gable’s Rhett Butler.

Leigh had to see off competition from 1,400 women to land the leading role, while Selznick delayed filming for two years to secure Gable’s services.

The book is going under the hammer with US auctioneers Nate D Sanders.

An auction house spokesman said: “The cast signed the book at the legendary premiere. It is a very good copy and scarce.

“Gone With The Wind was the most hyped film to be made at the time and even 80 years later it remains an iconic film.”

Leigh won an Oscar for best leading actress, while Gable and de Havilland were nominated for best actor and best supporting actress.
