Case toll drops by 9,000 in a week

DAILY coronaviru­s cases have fallen by 9,000 week-onweek, with 28,680 confirmed yesterday compared to almost 38,000 last Thursday.

Some 1,239 deaths were reported, close to the figure of 1,290 a week earlier.

Public Health England’s weekly report said case rates had decreased across all age groups and regions in the week to January 24.

PHE medical director Dr Yvonne Doyle said: “There are some initial signs that the current measures are bringing infection rates down but there is a long way to go.”

She said hospital admissions were rising in the East Midlands, West Midlands and Yorkshire & The

Humber and warned: “We should expect deaths to remain high for some time.”

Infection rates were highest in London at 435 per 100,000 people but the capital also saw the biggest drop from 659 in the previous week.

Lowest rates were seen in Yorkshire & the Humber at 230, down from 256.

Cases were highest among people in their 30s at 488 per 100,000, down from 648. For those 80 and over, the rate fell from 540.3 to 398.4.

The hospital admission rate for Covid-19 was 33.51 per 100,000, down from 35.64.

There were 30,333 Covid-19 patients in hospitals in England yesterday, a dip from around 33,000 a week ago.
