Record £7m swoop for eagle gold coin
THE “world’s most famous coin” has sold for a record £7million at auction.
The New York-style Brasher Doubloon, made in 1787 and featuring an eagle, is the finest example of seven known to exist.
The previous record for a gold coin was £5.5million for a $20 Double Eagle, sold 20 years ago.
Heritage Auctions, in Dallas, Texas, which sold the Brasher Doubloon last week, said: “It is the finest of its kind.
“It was just the third time the coin had been auctioned since 1848.
“It is the archetype of a rare coin, enjoying a lofty status in pop culture.
“It is known as The World’s Most Famous Coin to collectors.”
