French & Saunders salute funny girls
DAWN French and Jennifer Saunders will be reunited for a two-hour TV special celebrating women in comedy.
Filmed on the set of their classic sketch show, the duo will discuss female contributors to comic history from across the decades – and the globe.
French and Saunders: Funny Women aims to be “a warm, affectionate and illuminating celebration of women in comedy”.
The pair open with: “Are women funny?
“This is the thorny age-old question we have been chewing over since both of us were two years old and to date we still have no definitive answer.
“So in this programme we explore 50,000 or so irrefutable examples to see if we can draw any blatantly predetermined conclusions.” Dawn, 63, and Jennifer, 62, started working as a comedy duo in 1987 with the Comic Strip and performed in a sketch show in 2017 to mark the 30th anniversary of their partnership. In 2018, Dawn revealed they had a plan to make a movie together.
Their show’s best-loved movie spoofs included Harry Potter, Titanic, Thelma and Louise and Silence of the Lambs. Other favourite parodies have poked fun at Baywatch, Madonna and Bjork.
The show airs on UKTV’s Gold later this year. Executive producer Glen Middleham said: “It’s a total joy to listen to Dawn and Jennifer discuss their craft and that of the very many funny women who have influenced them. Two comedy icons.”
