A life in pictures... farewell to our Barry

- By John Twomey

DAILY Express photographer Barry Gomer has died at the age of 71 – after five decades of snapping royals, celebrities, politicians and moments that changed the world.

His pictures, often on the front page, were the envy of rivals.

Princess Diana wasa particular favourite and Barry pictured her countless times, accompanying her on her mine-clearing mission to Africa.

He was also outside No10 as Margaret Thatcher waved in triumph when she became Prime Minister in 1979.

Politicians John Major and Cecil Parkinson also got the Barry treatment.

Photos of stars ranged from Madonna and David Bowie to Tony Blackburn and Benny Hill as well as triumphant footballers and Olympic athletes.

At the other end of the scale, his images included the 1984 Libyan embassy siege.

Barry, inset above, died suddenly on Monday from a blood clot in his lung.

Widow Marthe said: “He was the nicest, most gentle man.” Former Express picture editor Mick Lidbury said: “He always produced the goods.”
