The five-star property lays claim to having the largest suites in Quinta do Lago and there are 132 of them, with either balcony or terrace views of the gardens. On-site dining options include Oasis for lunch, gourmet cuisine in the Dourado restaurant with the lobby bar for dainty teas and creative cocktails.

■■August will see the opening of County Tipperary’s historic Cashel Palace Hotel following a meticulous restoratio­n. Built in 1734 for the Archbishop of Cashel, it has been a hotel since the 1960s with visitors including Princess Di, Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor.

Set in 25 acres of grounds, its gardens stretch to the boundary of top attraction the Rock of Cashel – many of the 42 bedrooms and suites offer views of it. A luxury spa is among the hotel’s new additions.
