The five-star property lays claim to having the largest suites in Quinta do Lago and there are 132 of them, with either balcony or terrace views of the gardens. On-site dining options include Oasis for lunch, gourmet cuisine in the Dourado restaurant with the lobby bar for dainty teas and creative cocktails.

■■August will see the opening of County Tipperary’s historic Cashel Palace Hotel following a meticulous restoration. Built in 1734 for the Archbishop of Cashel, it has been a hotel since the 1960s with visitors including Princess Di, Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor.
