Hero Captain Tom in hospital with Covid

CAPTAIN Sir Tom Moore was battling Covid in hospital last night after missing out on his vaccinatio­n weeks ago.

The nation’s lockdown hero, 100, tested positive for the virus last week and was taken to Bedford Hospital yesterday.

He reportedly had not had his jab because he was already suffering from pneumonia.

Boris Johnson led the get well messages to the Second WorldWar veteran.

The Prime Minister said: “My thoughts are very much with Captain Tom Moore and his family.

“You’ve inspired the whole nation, and I know we are all wishing you a full recovery.”

Capt Tom, of Marston Moretaine, Beds, raised more than £32million for the NHS by walking round his garden last year.

His daughter Hannah Ingram-Moore said yesterday: “Over the last few weeks he was being treated for pneumonia and last week tested positive for Covid-19.

“He was at home with us until today when he needed additional help with his breathing. He is being treated in a ward although he is not in intensive care.

“The medical care he has received in the last few weeks has been remarkable.

“We know that the wonderful staff at Bedford Hospital will do all they can to make him comfortabl­e and hopefully return home as soon as possible.

“We understand that everyone will be wishing him well.We are of course focusing on my father and will update you when we are able to.”

Health Secretary Matt Hancock sent his “best wishes” andVaccine­s Minister Nadhim Zahawi said he was “praying”.

Michael Ball, who topped the charts with Capt Tom with their charity single You’ll Never Walk Alone, said: “Love and prayers for Captain Tom Moore and his lovely family as he battles this b ****** of a virus. Stay strong sir.We are all here for you.”

Captain Tom was knighted by the Queen in July and was made an honorary colonel.

The Ministry of Defence said: “We send our very best wishes and hope he makes a full and speedy recovery.”

Labour leader Keir Starmer said: “You’ve been an inspiratio­n to us all.” London Mayor Sadiq Khan said: “Hoping for a speedy recovery and to see Captain Tom back home with his family soon.”

Good Morning Britain’s Piers Morgan said: “We’re all rooting for you.”
