Now Blair hits at EU over bid to bar UK

- By Sam Lister

TONY Blair led Remainers in turning on the EU yesterday as the backlash continued over its vaccine meltdown.

The arch Europhile accused the bloc of being “very foolish” after it put the Northern Ireland peace process at risk.

The former prime minister believed the short-lived attempt to impose an Irish border as part of a vaccine export ban was “unacceptable”.

Mr Blair said: “It was a very foolish thing to do and fortunately they withdrew it very quickly.

“I was somebody who negotiated the Good Friday Agreement, it’s brought peace to the island of Ireland and it is vital we protect it and that’s why what the European Commission did was unacceptable.”

Widespread fury forced Brussels into a screeching U-turn late on Friday.

Irish Prime Minister Micheal Martin yesterday revealed he had only found out about the bloc’s plans when the move was made public.

He held crisis talks with Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, and the decision was ditched.

Tory Remainer Jeremy Hunt said Brussels made a “huge wrong step”.
