Flush out Marcus bullies

-

Social media has helped people stay in touch during the pandemic. But it has also created deep division and hurt. We are appalled to learn that Marcus Rashford, the Manchester United and England footballer, continues to be a victim of racial abuse on Instagram.

Vile treatment of black people shows “humanity and social media at its worst”, says Rashford.

The 23-year-old said trolls abused him following his team’s match on Saturday, but he would not give them the oxygen of publicity by taking screenshots of messages.

Facebook, which owns Instagram, says it has removed the accounts of some of his abusers – but that’s what the US giant always says after an incident such as this.

It’s not good enough. Mark Zuckerberg, Facebook’s boss, needs to take greater responsibility for such disgusting behaviour. The technology is there to do so.

These low-life bullies need to be flushed out like the vermin they have become.
