IS IT SAD THAT CASHPOINTS ARE VANISHING FROM STREETS?

- Belfast

NEWS that cashpoints will once again reduce in number is a sad day for us all (“Half of all cashpoints ‘could go in two years’”, January 29).

While I accept that spending cash is being consigned to the dustbin of history, there’s something comforting about knowing you can access your money when you need it.

How do you give a £10 gift to a loved one in a birthday card?

I enjoy giving money like this. I don’t want to enclose a voucher or transfer money on an email. It’s impersonal. Richard Tanner,

I’M afraid it comes as no surprise that cashpoints are on the decline. Like cheques before them, cash plays less and less of a role in our society.

Pubs, restaurants, hotels, shops and the internet are all set up for this now and when you do spend cash, it’s almost like a novelty for them. And let’s not forget the pandemic and how this has accelerated the decline in using cash.

People are sat at home and are spending money online and can’t get out, so what do they need this cash for? It’s sad but an inevitable response.
