Now we can get over line insists Ivan

IVAN TONEY believes Brentford are showing the character they need to return to the top flight for the first time in 74 years.

The Bees striker made it 19 goals for the season with a hat-trick in this thumping victory for last year’s play-off finalists.

The goals panel last night confirmed Toney’s shot for the second goal – originally credited to Tariqe Fosu – had gone over the line.

“If we want to get where we want to, which is the Premier League, we have to show character,” said Toney. “The gaffer [Thomas Frank] has been on at us to show that and we did.

“The atmosphere is massive but we can’t get ahead of ourselves. There are certain games we’ve played where we haven’t hit top gear and we’ve still come out with a result.

“As soon as we hit the gear we need, we can be unstoppable.”

Toney had no doubt he would be credited with his first senior hat-trick. “Tariqe’s like a brother to me and even he admitted it was over the line,” he added.

It was 2-2 at half-time before Wycombe collapsed and boss Gareth Ainsworth said: “I told them the second half wasn’t acceptable. We’re going to have to put that right now.”
