Bruce’s Toon gloom is lifted by Wilson double
FOR ONCE, Steve Bruce could afford a smile as he met the media.
Asked about the task he has at Newcastle, and the inevitable criticism a manager faces there when things do not go well, Bruce replied: “Well, you need to keep your dignity.”
Criticism is putting it mildly. Some would say character assassination. “I walked in with my eyes wide open,” added Bruce. “It’s been tough, but when everyone’s fit and available we’re a decent outfit.”
Another understatement. There were suggestions if this trip to Goodison did not go well, it could be his last as Magpies manager. But there were no struggles, only a side with conviction and belief, who outplayed high-flying Everton.
“I’ve been brave in the last month trying to get us up the pitch and be a bit more on the front foot,” Bruce said.
The player who stood tallest was CallumWilson, who scored two, hit the post twice, and missed a glorious chance that he admitted should have delivered his hat-trick.
“The result is vital just to give the boys a bit of a lift and confidence,” said Wilson.
“We have to take the game to teams.”
