Royal fail… postie left Pat, 72, to lie in snow

- By Sarah Ward

THE Royal Mail is investigating a postman who said he was too tired to help a 72-year-old widow who slipped on ice and hit her head.

Footage shows the postie walking off after watching bone disease sufferer Pat Stewart’s fall outside her home.

He even told her to put on her slippers as she lay in the snow.

The postman was caught on camera in Bainsford, Falkirk, on Thursday, saying: “I can’t help. I’m knackered. Absolutely knackered.”

The incident was captured on a neighbour’s Ring doorbell and posted on Facebook by Pat’s niece Sheryl Harkins.

Gran-of-two Pat has a nasty bump and was deeply upset.

The former social care manager lives alone after her husband Johnny died a decade ago and uses a Zimmer frame after falling twice in December.

Treatment for her osteoporosis has been delayed by lockdown.

She said: “I’ve done nothing

wrong. I’m a nice person. I couldn’t believe that he walked away and left me and didn’t seek anybody’s help. I’m still in shock.”

Sheryl, 36, said: “It was the coldest night in the UK for 26 years and he left my aunt lying on the ground. It just goes against everything; you wouldn’t treat a dog like that.”

Neighbours failed to hear Pat’s cries for help but Hermes delivery worker Karolina Domska, 22, was in the area and went to her aid. She later visited to check on her.

Sheryl added: “I was not due to come round to see her for another three hours, so she could have still been lying there if it wasn’t for the Hermes girl.”

Royal Mail said it expected the “highest standards”. It also apologised “for the distress this incident has caused”.

It added: “We are in touch with the customer concerned and will be investigating this incident.”

STRICTLY’S Giovanni Pernice says he would happily be vaccinated if the BBC introduced a No Jab, No Jive policy on performers on the hit show.

The pro-dancer said: “The priority for me and for us and for the BBC especially is to be safe.

“And if we have to work in environments where you have to dance and get close to somebody and a vaccine is required to be safe for everybody, then why not?”

Giovanni told how he had been unable to fly to Sicily to see his family because of lockdown, describing the situation as “very hard”.

He added: “I haven’t seen my mum and dad and sister for one year.

“We tried over Christmas but all the flights were cancelled, so we have to wait.”

Confident

Giovanni narrowly missed out on the final of Strictly after being partnered with Good Morning Britain’s Ranvir Singh.

The 30-year-old said although none of the pro-dancers knew if they were back on the BBC show later this year, he was confident it would be another successful series.

He said: “Last year was one of the biggest shows watched on television.

“For us, obviously it is making people at home happy and putting a smile on their face.”

During lockdown, Giovanni has kept the nation active with his live dance lessons via Instagram.

He hosts classes on Instagram, Monday to Friday, 5-6pm. Book now at www. lockdownclass.co.uk / @pernicegiovann1
