Despite the claims, both the White House and Downing Street said there had been no official approach from Hussein about the withdrawal and diplomats said the statement had all the hallmarks of a “total sham”.

107 years ago (1914)

HMHS Britannic, sister ship to the ill-fated RMS Titanic, was launched at Belfast’s Harland & Wolff shipyard.

Changes had been made to the vessel’s design following lessons learned from the sinking of the Titanic but the First World War meant she was never used as an ocean liner, instead serving as a hospital ship. She sank in 1916 after an explosion near Kea, Greece.

53 years ago (1968)

We told how 24 female patients died in a fire started by a discarded cigarette at Shrewsbury’s psychiatri­c hospital, Shelton.

A report found the hospital was understaff­ed and none of the nurses on duty were trained in fire safety.
