A Hard Mother’s Day’s Night

- By Steph Spyro

THEY may have taught the world to Twist And Shout, but here are The Beatles dancing with the most important women in their lives.

The Fab Four were snapped in 1964 at the Dorchester Hotel partying the night away with their mothers and aunts.

John, Paul, George and Ringo had just attended the premiere of their first feature film, A Hard Day’s Night, at the London Pavilion followed by a supper party which involved lots of dancing.

Sir Paul McCartney, now 78, took to the floor with his Aunt Joan who stepped in for the charity event. His mother Mary was diagnosed with cancer and died of an embolism in 1956 after an operation.

Looking dapper in a tux, Ringo Starr danced with his mother Elsie Starkey.

The drummer, now 80, was her only child and the pair remained close as the

Beatles travelled the world.

John

Lennon had a twirl with Louise Harrison, mum to the group’s lead guitarist George. John was 17 when mum Julia was killed by a car driven by an off-duty policeman. Earlier, the Beatles had attended the premiere with their wives and girlfriends, and guests including Princess Margaret. Piccadilly Circus was closed to traffic as 12,000 fans jostled to see the band. Sir Paul later said: “I remember Piccadilly being completely filled. We thought we would just show up in our limo, but it couldn’t get through.

“It wasn’t frightening – we never seemed to get worried by crowds. It always appeared to be a friendly crowd.” The most expensive tickets for the charity event cost £16 (£330 in today’s money).

QUIZ show Eggheads is shifting from the BBC to Channel 5, host Jeremy Vine revealed yesterday.

The programme, which sees teams of contestants pitted against a panel of pro quizzers, has been on the Beeb since 2003.

Jeremy, 55, revealed the move during his Channel 5 show yesterday, saying: “The programme which I’ve presented for more than 10 years, Eggheads, one of the greatest quizzes in the history of British TV, is moving to Channel 5 later this year.”

Eggheads started on BBC Two with Dermot Murnaghan as host before moving to One. Jeremy took over in 2008. The Egghead pros include the first Who Wants To Be A Millionaire? jackpot winner Judith Keppel.
