Anemone blanda

Just when all the familiar crocus and daffs are in full bloom, the alert garden lover may spot some more unusual spring flowers.

Anemone blanda look like daisies, growing a few inches high, in small groups or carpets hugging the ground. They grow from corms, which are sold while dry and dormant for planting in autumn.

For best results, soak them for 24 hours to rehydrate them immediately before planting.

Anemone blanda is at its best naturalised in the garden, where it needs well-drained soil and sun or light partial shade – usually at the front of a shrub border, though it can also be naturalised in grass.

Flowering continues from late February through March and April into May.

They come in a stunning range of colours, including white, violet-blue and several shades of pink.
