SIX ENGLISH SUCCESSES TO SAVOUR

-

1 Chapel Down Rosé (£11, 12%)

With aromas of strawberries and cream, Chapel Down’s English Rosé epitomises the most glorious British summers. Redcurrants and citrus notes on the palate lead to a crisp, fresh finish. Available from Sainsbury’s.

2 Denbies Sparkling Whitedowns NV (From £18.99, 12%)

Fantastic everyday fizz (who needs a special occasion?) blended from reichensteiner, seyval blanc and pinot noir by the Surrey producer. Mixes citrus and floral aromas and a hint of brioche with a crisp, dry palate and pleasant sparkle. Available from Denbies, Waitrose Cellar and Winesdirect.

3 Camel Valley Bacchus 2020 (£13.95, 12.5%)

This is a fabulous advert for bacchus as the UK’s most outstanding grape. Bursting with flavours of gooseberry, lime and elderflower and utterly redolent of lazy summer days. This Cornishproduced wine boasts a long and refreshing finish. Available from The Wine Society. 4

The label looks like it was painted by the great Eric Ravilious and the wine inside is equally classy. Notes of cherry and damson plums on the nose and a long, clean finish. Blended using mainly regent and rondo grapes from Glos. Available from Jascots.

Three Choirs Ravens Hill Red 2018 (£13.73, 12%) 5 Danebury Schönburger 2018 (£8.99, 11.5%)

Using an offbeat German grape that does well in England, Danebury has come up with something rather special. Notes of lemony zest jostle with aromas of pear and melon, balanced with flinty minerals to make this dry white from the heart of Hants. Available from grapebrittania.co.uk

Eight Acres Sparkling Rosé (£18, 11.5%)

Floral notes and red fruits wrapped in an exquisite pale pink, this sparkling, strawberry-scented rosé made from chardonnay grapes by Hush Heath Wine in Kent is another fantastic find. Available from The Co-op.
