WE’VE ALL GOT A HANG-UP ABOUT OBNOXIOUS PHONE SCAMMERS
IWAS rather disappointed when I called Nanny to ask if there was anything getting on her nerves at the moment. She said no and was very chilled – the lovely sunshine on the beautiful spring flowers have brought a smile to her face.
“Oh”, I said. And then, with a long intake of breath, she admitted one thing had been bothering her. “Okay, let’s have it,” I said. “Scam phone calls”, she replied. “They’re getting worse. Those horrible obnoxious people who are trying to con lovely people out of their hard-earned cash.”
I told Nanny that you can always tell, because they sound shifty.
“No, you’re quite wrong,” she retorted. “In fact, some of them sound very plausible, so you must always be careful if somebody wants to know something about your bank details.
“Somebody tells you you’ve been the subject of a scam and they’re calling from your bank and they’d like some details to sort out a new account.
“Put the phone down immediately and ring your bank.”
It seems there are more scams than ever before and more of us becoming victims.
So thanks Nanny. We will all take more care and if we put the phone down on a legitimate caller, never mind.
I should know. I’ve been putting the phone down on callers all my working life.
